A board game can be defined as any game played on a board with pieces or counters that are moved across the board. Many board games are fairly simply but some like chess and go require a lot of skill and strategy.

Board games have a long history and have been played in most societies and cultures and date back 1000's of yeas.

The origin of playing cards is obscure, but most agree they were invented in China after the invention of paper. It is more than likely that the ancestors of modern playing cards were introduced into Europe in the late 1300s, and spread rapidly across the continent.

The earliest cards were made by hand, one at a time, and were subsequently very expensive. Woodcuts were used to produce cards on a slightly larger scale, before the advent of modern printing. The four suits (spades, clubs, hearts, diamonds) now used in most of the world originated in France. German suits are hearts, bells, leaves, and acorns, while Spanish and Italian decks uses words, cups, clubs and coins.

English playing-cards are known and used throughout the world - everywhere where Poker and Bridge are played. In England, the same pack is used for other games such as Whist, Rummy, Cribbage, Nap and so forth.
