The earliest cards were made by hand, one at a time, and were subsequently very expensive. Woodcuts were used to produce cards on a slightly larger scale, before the advent of modern printing. The four suits (spades, clubs, hearts, diamonds) now used in most of the world originated in France. German suits are hearts, bells, leaves, and acorns, while Spanish and Italian decks uses words, cups, clubs and coins. English playing-cards are known and used throughout the world - everywhere where Poker and Bridge are played.
