What is student aid

how to apply for financial aid

Financial aid or Student aid are general terms that describe money available to students and their families to help offset the cost difference between a family’s Expected Family Contribution, or EFC, and the total cost of attending university.

Even if you do get a athletic scholarship the chances are that it wont be full-ride, it probably will not cover all of your college expenses.

There are four types of available student aid: Grants, scholarships, Loans and work study programs.

Grants and scholarships and grants are awarded by federal, state and local governments, colleges, businesses, organizations, and private citizens based on a wide ranging criteria: academics, sports, ethnic background, and financial need, to name just a few. You do not need to repay scholarship or grant money.

Student loans or parent loans are long-term, low-interest loans made to students or parents by private lending institutions or directly from the Federal Government. Any money received through a loan program must be repaid with interest.

Work-Study is another source of funds for college. Work study programs are based on financial need and provide students with funds through employment opportunities both on and off campus.
