About Ball State University

Ball State University, established in 1918, is located in Muncie, Indiana. It is a public research university with a student enrollment of more than 21,000 students, most of whom are undergraduate students. Ball State University academics are divided into 7 colleges: the Miller College of Business, the Teachers College, the College of Architecture and Planning, the College of Communication, Information and Media, the Burris Laboratory School, and the Indian Academy for Science, Mathematics and Humanities. Undergraduate students can choose from 180 academic majors and 130 academic minors, and may work towards one of the 175 bachelor’s degrees available. Ball State University also offers 103 master’s degree programs and 17 doctoral degree programs.

Athletics Department at Ball State University

The athletics department at Ball State University offers varsity sport as well as student-athlete support services such as sports medicine, athletic training and academic support.

The athletic facilities at Ball State University are extensive, and include the Schumann Stadium for football, the John E. Worthen Arena for basketball and volleyball, the Briner Sports Complex for field hockey, track and field, and soccer, the University Track, the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, and the Lewellyn Aquatics Center. There is also the BSU Turf Field for field hockey, the Ball Diamond for baseball, the BSU Softball Complex, the Irving Gymnasium and Practice Facility, and the Player’s Club and Delaware Country Club for men’s and women’s golf respectively.

Athletic Programs at Ball State University

Varsity sports teams include men’s baseball, football, basketball, swimming and diving, volleyball and golf, as well as women’s field hockey, cross country, basketball, golf, gymnastics, softball, tennis, swimming and diving, soccer, and volleyball.

There are also intramural sports, either league or tournament style, including badminton, battleship, ping-pong, tennis, wiffleball, and more. In addition, there are 36 club sports such as cricket, judo, Quidditch, synchronized swimming and paintball. The Student Recreation and Wellness Center also offers fitness classes, cardio machines and weights, as well as aquatics activities such as water polo and a swim meet.

Official Sports Team: Cardinals

The Ball State Cardinals are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I and all varsity teams compete in the Mid-American Conference except for the men’s volleyball team that competes in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. Some teams of the Ball State Cardinals have won championships, demonstrating athletic excellence. The Cardinals football team holds 10 conference championships, while the men’s basketball team holds 7 Mid-American Conference titles. The team mascot is named Charlie Cardinal.

Ball State University offers many scholarship opportunities for its students, including freshmen, transfer and continuing students. Approximately 75% of students at Ball State University receive some kind of financial aid, many of which are in the form of scholarships. All students applying for scholarships must submit the Free Application for Financial Student Aid form. Ball State Scholarships alone total to more than 500 academic, leadership, talent and athletic awards for students, including departmental scholarships, early graduation scholarships, and those specifically reserved for incoming freshmen. There are also over 30 outside scholarships available, many of which are program-specific.
